WWII Beyond Darwin Tour

The bombing of Darwin was not the end of the story.

Just a little outside Darwin lies a whole lot of intact World War II history.

Following the aerial attack on Darwin in February of 1942, airstrips and campsites were cleared south along the Stuart Highway to support and supply the northern defence forces.

Many WWII relics remain today ‘down-the-track’ and on this full-day tour, Walk Darwin will transport you inland to visit a few of the remaining accessible sites.

The highlight of your day is a guided tour of the No. 4 Repair and Salvage Unit (4RSU) camp which sits on private land at Pell Mell, a working cattle farm just north of Adelaide River. There will also be time to reflect on WWII in the Top End at Adelaide River War Cemetery before enjoying a hearty lunch (meal included).

Further exploration of the Coomalie district includes a visit to the Batchelor Museum housing displays honouring the men who were stationed at the Civil Aerodrome which became an important base for Allied Air operations during the war. The final stop before returning to Darwin is Strauss Airstrip where the aeroplane revetments are clearly visible over 75 years on.
